¹³Please say you are my sister, in order that it may go well with me on your account, and my soul will be certain to live due to you.”

¹⁴And an uncircumcised male who will not get the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, even that soul must be cut off from his people. He has broken my covenant.”

¹⁴Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

(19-20) ¹⁹Please, now, your servant has found favor in your eyes so that you are magnifying your loving-kindness, which you have exercised with me to preserve my soul alive, but I—I am not able to escape to the mountainous region for fear calamity may keep close to me and I certainly die. ²⁰Please, now, this city is nearby to flee there and it is a small thing. May I, please, escape there—is it not a small thing?—and my soul will live on.”

(19-20) ¹⁹Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. ²⁰Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”

(19-20) ¹⁹Ahora, por favor, tu siervo ha hallado favor a tus ojos de modo que estás engrandeciendo tu bondad amorosa, la cual has ejercido conmigo para conservar viva mi alma, pero yo... yo no puedo escapar a la región montañosa por temor de que la calamidad se mantenga cerca de mí y yo ciertamente muera. ²⁰Ahora, por favor, esta ciudad está cerca para huir allá, y es cosa pequeña. ²¹When Reuben heard this he tried to deliver him out of their hand. So he said: “Let us not strike his soul fatally.”

¹⁵For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.

¹⁹Seven days no sourdough is to be found in YOUR houses, because anyone tasting what is leavened, whether he is an alien resident or a native of the land, that soul must be cut off from the assembly of Israel.

¹⁹For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel.

¹⁹Por siete días no ha de hallarse masa fermentada en sus casas, porque cualquiera que guste lo leudado, sea residente forastero o natural del país, esa alma tiene que ser cortada de la asamblea de Israel.

¹⁴And YOU must keep the sabbath, for it is something holy to YOU. A profaner of it will positively be put to death. In case there is anyone doing work on it, then that soul must be cut off from the midst of his people.

¹⁴“‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people.

(20-21) ²⁰“‘And the soul who eats the flesh of the communion sacrifice, which is for Jehovah, while his uncleanness is upon him, that soul must be cut off from his people. ²¹And in case a soul touches anything unclean, the uncleanness of a man or an unclean beast or any unclean loathsome thing, and actually eats some of the flesh of the communion sacrifice, which is for Jehovah, that soul must be cut off from his people.’”

(20-21) ²⁰But if anyone who is unclean eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD, they must be cut off from their people. ²¹Anyone who touches something unclean—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD must be cut off from their people.’”

⁸And the one eating it will answer for his error, because he has profaned a holy thing of Jehovah; and that soul must be cut off from his people.

¹⁷“‘And in case a man strikes any soul of mankind fatally, he should be put to death without fail.

¹³But when the man was clean or did not happen to be off on a journey and neglected to prepare the passover sacrifice, that soul must then be cut off from his people, because the offering of Jehovah he did not present at its appointed time. For his sin that man will answer.

¹³But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people for not presenting the LORD’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.

(30-31) ³⁰“‘But the soul that does something deliberately, whether he is a native or an alien resident, he speaking abusively of Jehovah, in that case that soul must be cut off from among his people. ³¹Because it is Jehovah’s word that he has despised and his commandment that he has broken, that soul should be cut off without fail. His own error is upon him.’”

(30-31) ³⁰“‘But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or foreigner, blasphemes the LORD and must be cut off from the people of Israel. ³¹Because they have despised the LORD’s word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.’”

(30-31) ³⁰”’Pero el alma que haga algo deliberadamente, sea esta un natural o un residente forastero, puesto que habla injuriosamente de Jehová, en tal caso esa alma tiene que ser cortada de entre su pueblo. ³¹Porque la palabra de Jehová es lo que ha despreciado y su mandamiento lo que ha quebrantado, esa alma debe ser cortada sin falta. Su propio error está sobre ella’”.

¹³Everyone touching a corpse, the soul of whatever man may die, and who will not purify himself, has defiled Jehovah’s tabernacle, and that soul must be cut off from Israel. Because the water for cleansing has not been sprinkled upon him, he continues unclean. His uncleanness is still upon him.

¹³If they fail to purify themselves after touching a human corpse, they defile the LORD’s tabernacle. They must be cut off from Israel. Because the water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, they are unclean; their uncleanness remains on them.

¹³Todo el que toque un cadáver, el alma de cualquier hombre que muera, y que no se purifique, ha contaminado el tabernáculo de Jehová, y aquella alma tiene que ser cortada de Israel. Porque el agua de limpieza no se ha rociado sobre ella, continúa inmunda. Todavía está sobre ella su inmundicia.

²⁰“‘But the man who may be unclean and who will not purify himself, well, that soul must be cut off from the midst of the congregation, because it is Jehovah’s sanctuary that he has defiled. The water for cleansing was not sprinkled upon him. He is unclean.

²⁰But if those who are unclean do not purify themselves, they must be cut off from the community, because they have defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, and they are unclean.

²⁰”’Pero el hombre que sea inmundo y que no se purifique... pues, aquella alma tiene que ser cortada de en medio de la congregación, porque es el santuario de Jehová lo que él ha contaminado. El agua de limpieza no fue rociada sobre él. Es inmundo.

¹⁰Who has numbered the dust particles of Jacob,
And who has counted the fourth part of Israel?
Let my soul die the death of the upright ones,
And let my end turn out afterward like theirs.”

¹⁰Who can count the dust of Jacob
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,
and may my final end be like theirs!”

¹⁹As for YOU yourselves, camp outside the camp seven days. Everyone who has killed a soul and everyone who has touched someone slain, YOU should purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, YOU and YOUR captives.

¹⁹“Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.

¹⁹En cuanto a ustedes mismos, acampen fuera del campamento por siete días. Todos los que hayan matado un alma y todos los que hayan tocado a alguien que haya sido muerto, deben purificarse al tercer día y al séptimo día, ustedes y sus cautivos.

¹¹And YOU must choose cities convenient for yourselves. As cities of refuge they will serve for YOU, and the manslayer must flee there who fatally strikes a soul unintentionally.

¹¹select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee.

¹¹Y tienen que escoger ciudades que les sean convenientes a ustedes. Como ciudades de refugio les servirán, y allí tiene que huir el homicida que, sin intención, hiera mortalmente a un alma.

¹⁵For the sons of Israel and for the alien resident and for the settler in the midst of them these six cities will serve as a refuge, for anyone to flee there that fatally strikes a soul unintentionally.

¹⁵These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there.

¹⁵Para los hijos de Israel y para el residente forastero y para el poblador en medio de ellos estas seis ciudades servirán de refugio, para que huya allá cualquiera que, sin intención, hiera mortalmente a un alma.

³⁰“‘Every fatal striker of a soul should be slain as a murderer at the mouth of witnesses, and one witness may not testify against a soul for him to die.

³⁰“‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

⁶Otherwise, the avenger of blood may, because his heart is hot, chase after the manslayer and actually overtake him, since the way is great; and he may indeed strike his soul fatally, whereas there is no sentence of death for him, because he was no hater of him formerly.

⁶Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought.

⁶De otro modo, puede que el vengador de la sangre, por tener enardecido el corazón, corra tras el homicida y de veras lo alcance, dado que es grande el camino; y puede que realmente hiera su alma mortalmente, cuando el caso es que no hay sentencia de muerte para él, porque no le tenía odio con anterioridad.

¹¹“But in case there should happen to be a man hating his fellowman, and he has lain in wait for him and has risen up against him and struck his soul fatally and he has died, and the man has fled to one of these cities,

¹¹But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor, and then flees to one of these cities,

²⁶and to the girl you must do nothing. The girl has no sin deserving of death, because just as when a man rises up against his fellowman and indeed murders him, even a soul, so it is with this case.

²⁶Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor,

²⁵“‘Cursed is the one who accepts a bribe to strike a soul fatally, when it is innocent blood.’ (And all the people must say, ‘Amen!’)

(13-14) ¹³And YOU must preserve alive my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters and all who belong to them, and YOU must deliver our souls from death.”

¹⁴At that the men said to her: “Our souls are to die instead of YOU people! If YOU will not tell about this matter of ours, it must also occur that when Jehovah gives us the land, we also shall certainly exercise loving-kindness and trustworthiness toward you.”

(13-14) ¹³that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” ¹⁴“Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land.”

(13-14) ¹³Y tienen que conservar vivos a mi padre y mi madre y mis hermanos y mis hermanas y a todos los que les pertenecen a ellos, y tienen que librar de la muerte nuestras almas”.

¹⁴Por lo cual le dijeron los hombres: “¡Nuestras almas han de morir en lugar de ustedes! Si ustedes no informan acerca de este asunto nuestro, entonces tiene que suceder que cuando Jehová nos dé el país, entonces nosotros ciertamente ejerceremos bondad amorosa y confiabilidad para contigo”.

(1-43) ¹And it came about that as soon as Adoni-zedek the king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and then devoted it to destruction, that just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were continuing in their midst, ²he became very much afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty ones. ³Consequently Adoni-zedek the king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham the king of Hebron and to Piram the king of Jarmuth and to Japhia the king of Lachish and to Debir the king of Eglon, saying, ⁴“Come up to me and help me and let us strike Gibeon, because it has made peace with Joshua and the sons of Israel.” ⁵At this they gathered together and went on up, five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, these and all their camps, and they proceeded to camp against Gibeon and to war against it.

⁶Upon that the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying: “Do not let your hand relax from your slaves. Come up to us quickly and do save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites inhabiting the mountainous region have collected together against us.” ⁷So Joshua went on up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him and all the valiant mighty men.

⁸Then Jehovah said to Joshua: “Do not be afraid of them, for into your hand I have given them. Not a man of them will stand against you.” ⁹And Joshua proceeded to come against them by surprise. All night long he had gone up from Gilgal. ¹⁰And Jehovah went throwing them into confusion before Israel, and they began to slay them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and went pursuing them by way of the ascent of Beth-horon and slaying them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. ¹¹And it came about that while they were fleeing from before Israel and were on the descent of Beth-horon, Jehovah hurled great stones from the heavens upon them as far as Azekah, so that they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

¹²It was then that Joshua proceeded to speak to Jehovah on the day of Jehovah’s abandoning the Amorites to the sons of Israel, and he went on to say before the eyes of Israel:

“Sun, be motionless over Gibeon,
And, moon, over the low plain of Aijalon.”

¹³Accordingly the sun kept motionless, and the moon did stand still, until the nation could take vengeance on its enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun kept standing still in the middle of the heavens and did not hasten to set for about a whole day. ¹⁴And no day has proved to be like that one, either before it or after it, in that Jehovah listened to the voice of a man, for Jehovah himself was fighting for Israel.

¹⁵After that Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.

¹⁶Meantime these five kings fled and went hiding themselves in the cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷Then the report was made to Joshua, saying: “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” ¹⁸At that Joshua said: “ROLL great stones up to the mouth of the cave and assign men over it to guard them. ¹⁹As for YOU men, do not stand still. Chase after YOUR enemies, and YOU must strike them in the rear. Do not allow them to enter into their cities, for Jehovah YOUR God has given them into YOUR hands.”

²⁰And it came about that as soon as Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter, until these came to their end, and those who did survive of them escaped and went entering into the fortified cities, ²¹all the people then began to return to the camp, to Joshua, at Makkedah in peace. Not a man moved his tongue eagerly against the sons of Israel. ²²Then Joshua said: “OPEN the mouth of the cave and bring out these five kings from the cave to me.” ²³At that they did so and brought out to him from the cave these five kings, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon. ²⁴And it came about that as soon as they had brought out these kings to Joshua, Joshua proceeded to call all the men of Israel and to say to the commanders of the men of war that had gone with him: “Come forward. Place YOUR feet on the back of the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet on the back of their necks. ²⁵And Joshua went on to say to them: “Do not be afraid or be terrified. Be courageous and strong, for it is like this that Jehovah will do to all YOUR enemies against whom YOU are warring.”

²⁶And after that Joshua proceeded to strike them and put them to death and hang them upon five stakes, and they continued hanging upon the stakes until the evening. ²⁷And it came about that at the time of the setting of the sun Joshua commanded, and they went taking them down off the stakes and throwing them into the cave where they had hid themselves. Then they placed big stones at the mouth of the cave—until this very day.

²⁸And Joshua captured Makkedah on that day and went striking it with the edge of the sword. As for its king, he devoted him and every soul that was in it to destruction. He let no survivor remain. So he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

²⁹Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and warred against Libnah. ³⁰Accordingly Jehovah gave it also and its king into Israel’s hand, and they went striking it and every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword. They did not let a survivor remain in it. So they did to its king just as they had done to the king of Jericho.

³¹Next Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and went camping against it and warring upon it. ³²Accordingly Jehovah gave Lachish into Israel’s hand so that they captured it on the second day, and they went striking it and every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that they had done to Libnah.

³³It was then that Horam the king of Gezer went up to help Lachish. So Joshua struck him and his people until he had let not a survivor of his remain.

³⁴Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon and went camping against it and warring against it. ³⁵And they got to capture it on that day and began to smite it with the edge of the sword, and they devoted every soul that was in it to destruction on that day, according to all that they had done to Lachish.

³⁶Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and began to war against it. ³⁷And they got to capture it and went striking it and its king and all its towns and every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword. He did not let a survivor remain, according to all that he had done to Eglon. So he devoted it and every soul that was in it to destruction.

³⁸Finally Joshua and all Israel with him came back to Debir and began to war against it. ³⁹And he got to capture it and its king and all its towns, and they went striking them with the edge of the sword and devoting every soul that was in it to destruction. He did not let a survivor remain. Just as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, and just as he had done to Libnah and its king.

⁴⁰And Joshua proceeded to strike all the land of the mountainous region and the Negeb and the Shephelah and the slopes and all their kings. He did not let a survivor remain, and everything that breathed he devoted to destruction, just as Jehovah the God of Israel had commanded. ⁴¹And Joshua went striking them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza and all the land of Goshen and up to Gibeon. ⁴²And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because it was Jehovah the God of Israel who was fighting for Israel. ⁴³After that Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.

(1-43) ¹Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies. ²He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. ³So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. ⁴“Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.” ⁵Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it. ⁶The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.” ⁷So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. ⁸The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.” ⁹After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. ¹⁰The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. ¹¹As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. ¹²On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: ¹³So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, ¹⁴There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel! ¹⁵Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. ¹⁶Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, ¹⁸he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. ¹⁹But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand.” ²⁰So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities. ²¹The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites. ²²Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” ²³So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. ²⁴When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. ²⁵Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” ²⁶Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening. ²⁷At sunset Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day. ²⁸That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. ²⁹Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it. ³⁰The LORD also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. ³¹Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish; he took up positions against it and attacked it. ³²The LORD gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. ³³Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left. ³⁴Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon; they took up positions against it and attacked it. ³⁵They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish. ³⁶Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it. ³⁷They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it. ³⁸Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir. ³⁹They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron. ⁴⁰So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded. ⁴¹Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza and from the whole region of Goshen to Gibeon. ⁴²All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. ⁴³Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

⁶En esto, los hombres de Gabaón mandaron a decir a Josué, al campamento en Guilgal: “No dejes aflojar tu mano de con tus esclavos. Sube a nosotros rápidamente y de veras sálvanos y ayúdanos, porque todos los reyes de los amorreos que habitan la región montañosa se han juntado contra nosotros”. ⁷De modo que Josué subió de Guilgal, él y toda la gente de guerra con él, y todos los hombres valientes y poderosos.

⁸Entonces Jehová dijo a Josué: “No les tengas miedo, porque en tu mano los he dado. Ni un solo hombre de ellos se mantendrá en pie contra ti”. ⁹Y Josué procedió a ir contra ellos por sorpresa. Durante toda la noche había subidode Guilgal. ¹⁰Y Jehová fue poniéndolos en confusión delante de Israel, y empezaron a derribarlos con gran matanza en Gabaón y fueron persiguiéndolos por vía de la subida de Bet-horón y derribándolos hasta Azeqá y Maquedá. ¹¹Y aconteció que, mientras iban huyendo de delante de Israel y estaban en la bajada de Bet-horón, Jehová arrojó sobre ellos grandes piedras desde los cielos hasta Azeqá, de modo que murieron. Fueron más los que murieron debido a las piedras de granizo que los que los hijos de Israel mataron a espada.

¹²Fue entonces cuando Josué procedió a hablar a Jehová en el día que Jehová abandonó a los amorreos en manos de los hijos de Israel, y pasó a decir ante los ojos de Israel:
“Sol, tente inmóvil sobre Gabaón,
y, luna, sobre la llanura baja de Ayalón”.

¹³En conformidad, el sol se quedó inmóvil, y la luna de veras se paró, hasta que la nación pudo vengarse de sus enemigos. ¿No está escrito en el libro de Jasar? Y el sol se quedó parado en medio de los cielos y no se apresuró a ponerse por más o menos un día entero. ¹⁴Y ningún día ha resultado ser como aquel, ni antes de él ni después de él, por el hecho de que Jehová escuchó la voz de un hombre, porque Jehová mismo estaba peleando por Israel.

¹⁵Después de aquello, Josué, y con él todo Israel, volvió al campamento de Guilgal.

¹⁶Entretanto, estos cinco reyes huyeron y fueron escondiéndose en la cueva de Maquedá. ¹⁷Entonces se dio informe a Josué, y se le dijo: “Se ha hallado a los cinco reyes escondidos en la cueva de Maquedá”. ¹⁸Por lo cual Josué dijo: “Hagan rodar piedras grandes a la boca de la cueva y asignen hombres sobre ella para que los guarden. ¹⁹En cuanto a ustedes, no permanezcan inmóviles. Corran tras sus enemigos, y tienen que herirlos en la zaga. No les permitan entrar en sus ciudades, porque Jehová el Dios de ustedes los ha dado en manos de ustedes”.

²⁰Y aconteció que luego que Josué y los hijos de Israel hubieron acabado de derribarlos con muy grande matanza, hasta que estos quedaron acabados, y los que de ellos sí lograron sobrevivir escaparon y fueron entrando en las ciudades fortificadas, ²¹todo el pueblo entonces empezó a volver al campamento, a Josué, en Maquedá, en paz. Ni un solo hombre movió agitadamente la lengua contra los hijos de Israel. ²²Entonces Josué dijo: “Abran la boca de la cueva y sáquenme de la cueva a estos cinco reyes”. ²³Con eso, lo hicieron así, y le sacaron de la cueva a estos cinco reyes: el rey de Jerusalén, el rey de Hebrón, el rey de Jarmut, el rey de Lakís, el rey de Eglón. ²⁴Y aconteció que en cuanto ellos hubieron sacado estos reyes a Josué, Josué procedió a llamar a todos los hombres de Israel y a decir a los comandantes de los hombres de guerra que habían ido con él: “Salgan acá. Coloquen sus pies sobre la cerviz de estos reyes”. De modo que ellos salieron allá y colocaron los pies sobre sus cervices. ²⁵Y Josué pasó a decirles: “No tengan miedo ni se aterroricen. Sean animosos y fuertes, porque así hará Jehová a todos sus enemigos contra quienes estén guerreando”.

²⁶Y después de eso Josué procedió a herirlos y darles muerte y a colgarlos en cinco maderos, y quedaron colgados en los maderos hasta el atardecer. ²⁷Y aconteció que al tiempo de ponerse el sol Josué mandó, y se pusieron a bajarlos de los maderos y a arrojarlos en la cueva donde se habían escondido. Entonces colocaron grandes piedras a la boca de la cueva... hasta el día de hoy.

²⁸Y Josué tomó a Maquedá en aquel día y se puso a herirla a filo de espada. En cuanto a su rey, a él y a toda alma que había en ella los dio por entero a la destrucción. No dejó que quedara un solo sobreviviente. Así que hizo al rey de Maquedá tal como había hecho al rey de Jericó.

²⁹Entonces Josué, y con él todo Israel, pasó de Maquedá a Libná y guerreó contra Libná. ³⁰Por consiguiente, Jehová también dio a esta y su rey en mano de Israel, y se pusieron a herirla, y a toda alma que había en ella, a filo de espada. No dejaron que quedara en ella un solo sobreviviente. Así que hicieron a su rey tal como habían hecho al rey de Jericó.

³¹En seguida Josué, y con él todo Israel, pasó de Libná a Lakís y se puso a acampar contra ella y a hacerle la guerra. ³²Por consiguiente, Jehová dio a Lakís en mano de Israel de modo que la tomaron al segundo día, y se pusieron a herirla, y a toda alma que había en ella, a filo de espada, conforme a todo lo que habían hecho a Libná.

³³Fue entonces cuando Horam el rey de Guézer subió para ayudar a Lakís. Así que Josué los hirió a él y a su pueblo hasta que no dejó que le quedara un solo sobreviviente.

³⁴Entonces Josué, y con él todo Israel, pasó de Lakís a Eglón y se puso a acampar contra ella y a guerrear contra ella. ³⁵Y lograron tomarla en aquel día y empezaron a batirla a filo de espada, y a toda alma que había en ella la dieron por entero a la destrucción en aquel mismo día, conforme a todo lo que habían hecho a Lakís.

³⁶Entonces Josué, y con él todo Israel, subió de Eglón a Hebrón y empezó a guerrear contra ella. ³⁷Y lograron tomarla, y se pusieron a herir a filo de espada a esta y a su rey y a todos sus pueblos y a toda alma que había en ella. Él no dejó que quedara un solo sobreviviente, conforme a todo lo que había hecho a Eglón. Así que a ella y a toda alma que había en ella las dio por entero a la destrucción.

³⁸Por fin Josué, y con él todo Israel, volvió a Debir y empezó a guerrear contra ella. ³⁹Y logró tomarla, y a su rey y a todos sus pueblos, y se pusieron a herirlos a filo de espada y a dar por entero a la destrucción toda alma que había en ella. No dejó que quedara un solo sobreviviente. Tal como había hecho a Hebrón, así hizo a Debir y a su rey, y tal como había hecho a Libná y a su rey.

⁴⁰Y Josué procedió a herir toda la tierra de la región montañosa y el Négueb y la Sefelá y las laderas y a todos sus reyes. No dejó que quedara un solo sobreviviente, y todo lo que respiraba lo dio por entero a la destrucción, tal como había mandado Jehová el Dios de Israel. ⁴¹Y Josué fue hiriéndolos desde Qadés-barnea hasta Gaza y toda la tierra de Gosén y hasta Gabaón. ⁴²Y Josué tomó a todos estos reyes y su tierra de una sola vez, porque era Jehová el Dios de Israel quien estaba peleando por Israel. ⁴³Después de eso Josué, y con él todo Israel, regresó al campamento de Guilgal.

¹¹And they went striking every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword, devoting [them] to destruction. No breathing thing at all was left over, and he burned Hazor in the fire.

¹¹Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed, and he burned Hazor itself.

¹¹Y se pusieron a herir a filo de espada a todas las almas que había en ella, dándo[las] por entero a la destrucción. No quedó cosa alguna que respirara, y él quemó a Hazor en el fuego.

³for the manslayer who fatally strikes a soul unintentionally without knowing it to flee there; and they must serve YOU as a refuge from the avenger of blood.

³so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.

⁹These became the cities appointed for all the sons of Israel and for the alien resident who resides as an alien in their midst, for anyone to flee there who fatally strikes a soul unintentionally, that he may not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until his standing before the assembly.

⁹Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.

¹⁸Zebulun was a people that scorned their souls to the point of death;
Naphtali also, on the heights of the field.

¹⁸The people of Zebulun risked their very lives;
so did Naphtali on the terraced fields.

¹⁶And it came about that because she pressured him with her words all the time and kept urging him, his soul got to be impatient to the point of dying.

³⁰Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

⁴And he himself went into the wilderness a day’s journey, and at length came and sat down under a certain broom tree. And he began to ask that his soul might die and to say: “It is enough! Now, O Jehovah, take my soul away, for I am no better than my forefathers.”

⁴while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

⁴Y él mismo entró en el desierto camino de un día, y por fin llegó y se sentó debajo de cierta retama. Y se puso a pedir que muriera su alma, y a decir: “¡Basta! Ahora, oh Jehová, quítame el alma, porque no soy mejor que mis antepasados”.

³¹So his servants said to him: “Here, now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are kings of loving-kindness. Please, let us carry sackcloth upon our loins and ropes upon our heads, and let us go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will preserve your soul alive.”

³¹His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”

³¹Así que sus siervos le dijeron: “Ve esto: nosotros hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes de bondad amorosa. Por favor, déjanos llevar sacos sobre nuestros lomos y sogas sobre nuestras cabezas, y déjanos salir al rey de Israel. Tal vez conserve viva tu alma”.

¹⁵So that my soul chooses suffocation,
Death rather than my bones.

¹⁵so that I prefer strangling and death,
rather than this body of mine.

²⁰And the very eyes of the wicked will fail;
And a place for flight will certainly perish from them,

⁴He is tearing his soul to pieces in his anger.

is the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
Or must the rocks be moved from their place?

²²And his soul draws near to the pit,
And his life to those inflicting death.

²That no one may tear my soul to pieces as a lion does,
Snatching [me] away when there is no deliverer.

²or they will tear me apart like a lion
and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

²⁹All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and will bow down;

¹⁷A man burdened with the bloodguilt for a soul will himself flee even to the pit. Let them not get hold of him.

³Incline YOUR ear and come to me. Listen, and YOUR soul will keep alive, and I shall readily conclude with YOU people an indefinitely lasting covenant respecting the loving-kindnesses to David that are faithful.

I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.

³⁴Also, in your skirts there have been found the blood marks of the souls of the innocent poor ones. Not in the act of breaking in have I found them, but [they are] upon all these.

   the lifeblood of the innocent poor,
   though you did not catch them breaking in.
Yet in spite of all this

¹⁰And I proceeded to say: “Alas, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah! Truly you have absolutely deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘Peace itself will become YOURS,’ and the sword has reached clear to the soul.”

¹⁰Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign LORD! How completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ when the sword is at our throats!”

¹⁰Y procedí a decir: “¡Ay, oh Señor Soberano Jehová! Verdaderamente has engañado por completo a este pueblo y a Jerusalén, al decir: ‘La paz misma llegará a ser de ustedes’, y la espada ha alcanzado hasta la misma alma”.

¹⁷Jeremiah now said to Zedekiah: “This is what Jehovah, the God of armies, the God of Israel, has said, ‘If you will without fail go out to the princes of the king of Babylon, your soul will also certainly keep living and this city itself will not be burned with fire, and you yourself and your household will certainly keep living.

¹⁷Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.

¹⁷Jeremías ahora dijo a Sedequías: “Esto es lo que ha dicho Jehová, el Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘Si sales sin falta a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, tu alma también ciertamente seguirá viviendo, y esta ciudad misma no será quemada con fuego, y tú mismo y tu casa ciertamente seguirán viviendo.

¹⁴And they proceeded to say to him: “Do you not at all know that Baalis, the king of the sons of Ammon, himself has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to strike you to the soul?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam did not believe them.

¹⁴and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

¹⁴Y procedieron a decirle: “¿Acaso no sabes que Baalís, el rey de los hijos de Ammón, ha enviado él mismo a Ismael hijo de Netanías para herirte hasta el alma?”. Pero Guedalías hijo de Ahiqam no les creyó.

¹⁹And will YOU profane me toward my people for the handfuls of barley and for the morsels of bread, in order to put to death the souls that ought not to die and in order to preserve alive the souls that ought not to live by YOUR lie to my people, the hearers of a lie?”’

¹⁹You have profaned me among my people for a few handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to my people, who listen to lies, you have killed those who should not have died and have spared those who should not live.

¹⁹¿Y me profanarán para con mi pueblo por los puñados de cebada y por los bocados de pan, para dar muerte a las almas que no deberían morir y para conservar vivas a las almas que no deberían vivir, por la mentira de ustedes a mi pueblo, los oidores de una mentira?”’.

¹⁷And by a great military force and by a multitudinous congregation Pharaoh will not make him effective in the war, by throwing up a siege rampart and by building a siege wall, in order to cut off many souls.

¹⁷Pharaoh with his mighty army and great horde will be of no help to him in war, when ramps are built and siege works erected to destroy many lives.

⁶“‘Now as regards the watchman, in case he sees the sword coming and he actually does not blow the horn and the people itself gets no warning at all and a sword comes and takes away from them soul, for its own error it itself must be taken away, but its blood I shall ask back from the hand of the watchman himself.’

⁶But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’

(1-49) ¹Now on a sabbath he happened to be passing through grainfields, and his disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them with their hands. ²At this some of the Pharisees said: “Why are YOU doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” ³But Jesus said in reply to them: “Have YOU never read the very thing David did when he and the men with him got hungry? ⁴How he entered into the house of God and received the loaves of presentation and ate and gave some to the men with him, which it is lawful for no one to eat but for the priests only?” ⁵And he went on to say to them: “Lord of the sabbath is what the Son of man is.”

⁶In the course of another sabbath he entered into the synagogue and began teaching. And there was a man present whose right hand was withered. ⁷The scribes and the Pharisees were now watching him closely to see whether he would cure on the sabbath, in order to find some way to accuse him. ⁸He, however, knew their reasonings, yet he said to the man with the withered hand: “Get up and stand in the center.” And he rose and took his stand. ⁹Then Jesus said to them: “I ask YOU men, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do injury, to save or to destroy a soul?” ¹⁰And after looking around at them all, he said to the man: “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was restored. ¹¹But they became filled with madness, and they began to talk over with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹²In the progress of these days he went out into the mountain to pray, and he continued the whole night in prayer to God. ¹³But when it became day he called his disciples to him and chose from among them twelve, whom he also named apostles: ¹⁴Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, ¹⁵and Matthew and Thomas, and James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon who is called “the zealous one,” ¹⁶and Judas [the son] of James, and Judas Iscariot, who turned traitor.

¹⁷And he came down with them and took his station on a level place, and there was a great crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of people from all of Judea and Jerusalem and the maritime country of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and be healed of their sicknesses. ¹⁸Even those troubled with unclean spirits were cured. ¹⁹And all the crowd were seeking to touch him, because power was going out of him and healing them all.

²⁰And he lifted up his eyes upon his disciples and began to say:

“Happy are YOU poor, because YOURS is the kingdom of God.

²¹“Happy are YOU who hunger now, because YOU will be filled.

“Happy are YOU who weep now, because YOU will laugh.

²²“Happy are YOU whenever men hate YOU, and whenever they exclude YOU and reproach YOU and cast out YOUR name as wicked for the sake of the Son of man. ²³Rejoice in that day and leap, for, look! YOUR reward is great in heaven, for those are the same things their forefathers used to do to the prophets.

²⁴“But woe to YOU rich persons, because YOU are having YOUR consolation in full.

²⁵“Woe to YOU who are filled up now, because YOU will go hungry.

“Woe, YOU who are laughing now, because YOU will mourn and weep.

²⁶“Woe, whenever all men speak well of YOU, for things like these are what their forefathers did to the false prophets.

²⁷“But I say to YOU who are listening, Continue to love YOUR enemies, to do good to those hating YOU, ²⁸to bless those cursing YOU, to pray for those who are insulting YOU. ²⁹To him that strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also; and from him that takes away your outer garment, do not withhold even the undergarment. ³⁰Give to everyone asking you, and from the one taking your things away do not ask [them] back.

³¹“Also, just as YOU want men to do to YOU, do the same way to them.

³²“And if YOU love those loving YOU, of what credit is it to YOU? For even the sinners love those loving them. ³³And if YOU do good to those doing good to YOU, really of what credit is it to YOU? Even the sinners do the same. ³⁴Also, if YOU lend [without interest] to those from whom YOU hope to receive, of what credit is it to YOU? Even sinners lend [without interest] to sinners that they may get back as much. ³⁵To the contrary, continue to love YOUR enemies and to do good and to lend [without interest], not hoping for anything back; and YOUR reward will be great, and YOU will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind toward the unthankful and wicked. ³⁶Continue becoming merciful, just as YOUR Father is merciful.

³⁷“Moreover, stop judging, and YOU will by no means be judged; and stop condemning, and YOU will by no means be condemned. Keep on releasing, and YOU will be released. ³⁸Practice giving, and people will give to YOU. They will pour into YOUR laps a fine measure, pressed down, shaken together and overflowing. For with the measure that YOU are measuring out, they will measure out to YOU in return.”

³⁹Then he also spoke an illustration to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Both will tumble into a pit, will they not? ⁴⁰A pupil is not above his teacher, but everyone that is perfectly instructed will be like his teacher. ⁴¹Why, then, do you look at the straw that is in your brother’s eye, but do not observe the rafter that is in your own eye? ⁴²How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, allow me to extract the straw that is in your eye,’ while you yourself are not looking at the rafter in that eye of yours? Hypocrite! First extract the rafter from your own eye, and then you will see clearly how to extract the straw that is in your brother’s eye.

⁴³“For there is not a fine tree producing rotten fruit; again there is not a rotten tree producing fine fruit. ⁴⁴For each tree is known by its own fruit. For example, people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they cut grapes off a thornbush. ⁴⁵A good man brings forth good out of the good treasure of his heart, but a wicked man brings forth what is wicked out of his wicked [treasure]; for out of the heart’s abundance his mouth speaks.

⁴⁶“Why, then, do YOU call me ‘Lord! Lord!’ but do not do the things I say? ⁴⁷Everyone that comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show YOU whom he is like: ⁴⁸He is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid a foundation upon the rock-mass. Consequently, when a flood arose, the river dashed against that house, but was not strong enough to shake it, because of its being well built. ⁴⁹On the other hand, he who hears and does not do, is like a man who built a house upon the ground without a foundation. Against it the river dashed, and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house became great.”

(1-49) ¹One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. ²Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” ³Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? ⁴He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” ⁵Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” ⁶On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. ⁷The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. ⁸But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there. ⁹Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” ¹⁰He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. ¹¹But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. ¹²One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. ¹³When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: ¹⁴Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, ¹⁵Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, ¹⁶Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. ¹⁷He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, ¹⁸who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, ¹⁹and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. ²⁰Looking at his disciples, he said: ²¹Blessed are you who hunger now,
   for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
   for you will laugh.
²²Blessed are you when people hate you,
   when they exclude you and insult you
   and reject your name as evil,
      because of the Son of Man. ²³“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. ²⁴“But woe to you who are rich,
   for you have already received your comfort.
²⁵Woe to you who are well fed now,
   for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
   for you will mourn and weep.
²⁶Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
   for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. ²⁷“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, ²⁸bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. ²⁹If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. ³⁰Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. ³¹Do to others as you would have them do to you. ³²“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. ³³And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. ³⁴And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. ³⁵But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. ³⁶Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. ³⁷“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. ³⁸Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” ³⁹He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? ⁴⁰The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. ⁴¹“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ⁴²How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. ⁴³“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. ⁴⁴Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. ⁴⁵A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. ⁴⁶“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? ⁴⁷As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. ⁴⁸They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. ⁴⁹But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

¹⁷Y bajó con ellos y se apostó en un lugar llano, y había una gran muchedumbre de sus discípulos, y una gran multitud del pueblo de toda Judea y de Jerusalén y del país marítimo de Tiro y Sidón, que vinieron a oírle y a ser sanados de sus enfermedades. ¹⁸Hasta aquellos a quienes perturbaban espíritus inmundos eran curados. ¹⁹Y toda la muchedumbre procuraba tocarlo, porque de él salía poder y sanaba a todos.

²⁰Y él alzó los ojos sobre sus discípulos y se puso a decir:
“Felices son ustedes, los pobres, porque de ustedes es el reino de Dios.

²¹”Felices son ustedes los que tienen hambre ahora, porque serán saciados.

”Felices son ustedes los que lloran ahora, porque reirán.

²²”Felices son ustedes cuando los hombres los odien, y cuando los excluyan y los vituperen y desechen su nombre como inicuo por causa del Hijo del hombre. ²³Regocíjense en aquel día y salten, porque, ¡miren!, su galardón es grande en el cielo, porque esas son las mismas cosas que hacían los antepasados de ellos a los profetas.

²⁴”Mas ¡ay de ustedes los ricos, porque ya disfrutan de su consolación completa!

²⁵”¡Ay de ustedes los que están saciados ahora, porque padecerán hambre!

”¡Ay, ustedes que ríen ahora, porque se lamentarán y llorarán!

²⁶”¡Ay, cuando todos los hombres hablen bien de ustedes, porque cosas como estas son las que los antepasados de ellos hicieron a los falsos profetas!

²⁷”Pero les digo a ustedes los que escuchan: Continúen amando a sus enemigos, haciendo bien a los que los odian, ²⁸bendiciendo a los que los maldicen, orando por los que los insultan. ²⁹Al que te hiera en una mejilla, ofrécele también la otra; y al que te quite tu prenda de vestir exterior, no le retengas siquiera la prenda de vestir interior. ³⁰Da a todo el que te pida, y al que te quite lo tuyo, no [lo] pidas de vuelta.

³¹”También, así como quieren que los hombres les hagan a ustedes, háganles de igual manera a ellos.

³²”Y si ustedes aman a los que los aman, ¿de qué mérito les es? Porque hasta los pecadores aman a los que los aman. ³³Y si hacen bien a los que les hacen bien, ¿de qué mérito, realmente, les es a ustedes? Hasta los pecadores hacen lo mismo. ³⁴También, si prestan [sin interés] a aquellos de quienes esperan recibir, ¿de qué mérito les es? Hasta los pecadores prestan [sin interés] a los pecadores para que se les devuelva otro tanto. ³⁵Al contrario, continúen amando a sus enemigos y haciendo bien y prestando [sin interés], sin esperar que se les devuelva nada; y su galardón será grande, y serán hijos del Altísimo, porque él es bondadoso para con los ingratos e inicuos. ³⁶Continúen haciéndose misericordiosos, así como su Padre es misericordioso.

³⁷”Además, dejen de juzgar, y de ninguna manera serán juzgados; y dejen de condenar, y de ninguna manera serán condenados. Sigan poniendo en libertad, y se les pondrá en libertad. ³⁸Practiquen el dar, y se les dará. Derramarán en sus regazos una medida excelente, apretada, remecida y rebosante. Porque con la medida con que ustedes miden, se les medirá en cambio”.

³⁹Entonces les habló también una ilustración: “Un ciego no puede guiar a un ciego, ¿verdad? Ambos caerán en un hoyo, ¿no es cierto? ⁴⁰El alumno no es superior a su maestro, pero todo el que esté perfectamente instruido será como su maestro. ⁴¹¿Por qué, entonces, miras la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano, pero no observas la viga que está en tu propio ojo? ⁴²¿Cómo puedes decir a tu hermano: ‘Hermano, permíteme extraer la paja que está en tu ojo’, mientras que tú mismo no miras la viga en ese ojo tuyo? ¡Hipócrita! Primero extrae la viga de tu propio ojo, y entonces verás claramente cómo extraer la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano.

⁴³”Porque no hay árbol excelente que produzca fruto podrido; de nuevo, no hay árbol podrido que produzca fruto excelente. ⁴⁴Porque cada árbol es conocido por su propio fruto. Por ejemplo, no se recogen higos de espinos, ni de la zarza se cortan uvas. ⁴⁵El hombre bueno, del buen tesoro de su corazón produce lo bueno; pero el hombre inicuo produce lo que es inicuo de su [tesoro] inicuo; porque de la abundancia del corazón habla su boca.

⁴⁶”Entonces, ¿por qué me llaman ‘¡Señor! ¡Señor!’, pero no hacen las cosas que digo? ⁴⁷Todo el que viene a mí y oye mis palabras y las hace, les mostraré a quién es semejante: ⁴⁸Es semejante a un hombre que, al edificar una casa, cavó y ahondó y puso el fundamento sobre la masa rocosa. Por consiguiente, cuando sobrevino una inundación, el río rompió contra aquella casa, pero no tuvo la fuerza para sacudirla, porque estaba bien edificada. ⁴⁹Por otra parte, el que oye, y no hace, es semejante a un hombre que edificó una casa sobre tierra sin fundamento. El río rompió contra esta, y esta inmediatamente se desplomó, y la ruina de aquella casa vino a ser grande”.

(1-62) ¹Then he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to cure sicknesses. ²And so he sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God and to heal, ³and he said to them: “Carry nothing for the trip, neither staff nor food pouch, nor bread nor silver money; neither have two undergarments. ⁴But wherever YOU enter into a home, stay there and leave from there. ⁵And wherever people do not receive YOU, on going out of that city shake the dust off YOUR feet for a witness against them.” ⁶Then starting out they went through the territory from village to village, declaring the good news and performing cures everywhere.

⁷Now Herod the district ruler heard of all the things happening, and he was in great perplexity because of its being said by some that John had been raised up from the dead, ⁸but by others that Elijah had appeared, but by still others that a certain one of the ancient prophets had risen. ⁹Herod said: “John I beheaded. Who, then, is this about whom I am hearing such things?” So he was seeking to see him.

¹⁰And when the apostles returned they recounted to him what things they had done. With that he took them along and withdrew to privacy into a city called Bethsaida. ¹¹But the crowds, getting to know it, followed him. And he received them kindly and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those needing a cure. ¹²Then the day started to decline. The twelve now came up and said to him: “Dismiss the crowd, that they may go into the villages and countryside round about and procure lodging and find provisions, because out here we are in a lonely place.” ¹³But he said to them: “YOU give them something to eat.” They said: “We have nothing more than five loaves and two fishes, unless perhaps we ourselves go and buy foodstuffs for all these people.” ¹⁴They were, in fact, about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples: “Have them recline as at meals, in groups of about fifty each.” ¹⁵And they did so and had them all recline. ¹⁶Then taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, blessed them and broke them up and began to give them to the disciples to set before the crowd. ¹⁷So they all ate and were satisfied, and the surplus that they had was taken up, twelve baskets of fragments.

¹⁸Later, while he was praying alone, the disciples came together to him, and he questioned them, saying: “Who are the crowds saying that I am?” ¹⁹In reply they said: “John the Baptist; but others, Elijah, and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has risen.” ²⁰Then he said to them: “YOU, though, who do YOU say I am?” Peter said in reply: “The Christ of God.” ²¹Then in a stern talk to them he instructed them not to be telling this to anybody, ²²but said: “The Son of man must undergo many sufferings and be rejected by the older men and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised up.”

²³Then he went on to say to all: “If anyone wants to come after me, let him disown himself and pick up his torture stake day after day and follow me continually. ²⁴For whoever wants to save his soul will lose it; but whoever loses his soul for my sake is the one that will save it. ²⁵Really, what does a man benefit himself if he gains the whole world but loses his own self or suffers damage? ²⁶For whoever becomes ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of this one when he arrives in his glory and that of the Father and of the holy angels. ²⁷But I tell YOU truthfully, There are some of those standing here that will not taste death at all until first they see the kingdom of God.”

²⁸In actual fact, about eight days after these words, he took Peter and John and James along and climbed up into the mountain to pray. ²⁹And as he was praying the appearance of his face became different and his apparel became glitteringly white. ³⁰Also, look! two men were conversing with him, who were Moses and Elijah. ³¹These appeared with glory and began talking about his departure that he was destined to fulfill at Jerusalem. ³²Now Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep; but when they got fully awake they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. ³³And as these were being separated from him, Peter said to Jesus: “Instructor, it is fine for us to be here, so let us erect three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah,” he not realizing what he was saying. ³⁴But as he was saying these things a cloud formed and began to overshadow them. As they entered into the cloud, they became fearful. ³⁵And a voice came out of the cloud, saying: “This is my Son, the one that has been chosen. Listen to him.” ³⁶And as the voice occurred Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet and did not report to anyone in those days any of the things they saw.

³⁷On the succeeding day, when they got down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. ³⁸And, look! a man cried out from the crowd, saying: “Teacher, I beg you to take a look at my son, because he is my only-begotten, ³⁹and, look! a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it throws him into convulsions with foam, and it scarcely withdraws from him after bruising him. ⁴⁰And I begged your disciples to expel it, but they could not.” ⁴¹In response Jesus said: “O faithless and twisted generation, how long must I continue with YOU and put up with YOU? Lead your son over here.” ⁴²But even as he was approaching, the demon dashed him to the ground and violently convulsed him. However, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and delivered him to his father. ⁴³Well, they all began to be astounded at the majestic power of God.

Now as they were all marveling at all the things he was doing, he said to his disciples: ⁴⁴“Give lodgment to these words in YOUR ears, for the Son of man is destined to be delivered into the hands of men.” ⁴⁵But they continued without understanding of this saying. In fact, it was concealed from them that they might not see through it, and they were afraid to question him about this saying.

⁴⁶Then a reasoning entered among them as to who would be the greatest of them. ⁴⁷Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a young child, set it beside him ⁴⁸and said to them: “Whoever receives this young child on the basis of my name receives me [too], and whoever receives me receives him [also] that sent me forth. For he that conducts himself as a lesser one among all of YOU is the one that is great.”

⁴⁹In response John said: “Instructor, we saw a certain man expelling demons by the use of your name and we tried to prevent him, because he is not following with us.” ⁵⁰But Jesus said to him: “Do not YOU men try to prevent [him], for he that is not against YOU is for YOU.”

⁵¹As the days were now coming to the full for him to be taken up, he firmly set his face to go to Jerusalem. ⁵²So he sent forth messengers in advance of him. And they went their way and entered into a village of Samaritans, to make preparation for him; ⁵³but they did not receive him, because his face was set for going to Jerusalem. ⁵⁴When the disciples James and John saw this they said: “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and annihilate them?” ⁵⁵But he turned and rebuked them. ⁵⁶So they went to a different village.

⁵⁷Now as they were going on the road, someone said to him: “I will follow you to wherever you may depart.” ⁵⁸And Jesus said to him: “Foxes have dens and birds of heaven have roosts, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay down his head.” ⁵⁹Then he said to another: “Be my follower.” The man said: “Permit me first to leave and bury my father.” ⁶⁰But he said to him: “Let the dead bury their dead, but you go away and declare abroad the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹And still another said: “I will follow you, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those in my household.” ⁶²Jesus said to him: “No man that has put his hand to a plow and looks at the things behind is well fitted for the kingdom of God.”

(1-62) ¹When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, ²and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. ³He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. ⁴Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. ⁵If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” ⁶So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. ⁷Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, ⁸others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. ⁹But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him. ¹⁰When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, ¹¹but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. ¹²Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” ¹³He replied, “You give them something to eat.” ¹⁴(About five thousand men were there.) ¹⁵The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. ¹⁶Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. ¹⁷They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. ¹⁸Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” ¹⁹They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” ²⁰“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” ²¹Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. ²²And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” ²³Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. ²⁴For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. ²⁵What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? ²⁶Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. ²⁷“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” ²⁸About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. ²⁹As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. ³⁰Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. ³¹They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. ³²Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. ³³As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) ³⁴While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. ³⁵A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” ³⁶When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. ³⁷The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. ³⁸A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. ³⁹A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. ⁴⁰I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.” ⁴¹“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” ⁴²Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. ⁴³And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. ⁴⁴“Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” ⁴⁵But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. ⁴⁶An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. ⁴⁷Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. ⁴⁸Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.” ⁴⁹“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” ⁵⁰“Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” ⁵¹As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. ⁵²And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; ⁵³but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. ⁵⁴When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” ⁵⁵But Jesus turned and rebuked them. ⁵⁶Then he and his disciples went to another village. ⁵⁷As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” ⁵⁸Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” ⁵⁹He said to another man, “Follow me.” ⁶⁰Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” ⁶²Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

(1-62) ¹Entonces convocó a los doce y les dio poder y autoridad sobre todos los demonios, y para curar enfermedades. ²Y los envió a predicar el reino de Dios y a hacer curaciones, ³y les dijo: “No lleven nada para el viaje, ni bastón, ni alforja, ni pan, ni dinero en plata; tampoco tengan dos prendas de vestir interiores. ⁴Pero dondequiera que entren en una casa, quédense allí y partan de allí. ⁵Y dondequiera que no los reciban, al salir de aquella ciudad, sacúdanse el polvo de los pies para testimonio contra ellos”. ⁶Partiendo entonces, ellos recorrieron el territorio de aldea en aldea, declarando las buenas nuevas y ejecutando curaciones por todas partes.

⁷Ahora bien, Herodes el gobernante de distrito oyó todas las cosas que acontecían, y estaba muy perplejo porque algunos decían que Juan había sido levantado de entre los muertos, ⁸pero otros que Elías había aparecido, pero otros que uno de los antiguos profetas se había levantado. ⁹Herodes dijo: “A Juan yo lo decapité. ¿Quién, pues, es este de quien oigo tales cosas?”. De modo que procuraba verlo.

¹⁰Y cuando los apóstoles volvieron, le refirieron qué cosas habían hecho. Entonces los tomó consigo y se retiró a un sitio privado en una ciudad llamada Betsaida. ¹¹Pero las muchedumbres, al saberlo, lo siguieron. Y él los recibió amablemente y se puso a hablarles del reino de Dios, y sanó a los que tenían necesidad de curación. ¹²Luego el día comenzó a declinar. ²³Siguiendo entonces, dijo a todos: “Si alguien quiere venir en pos de mí, repúdiese a sí mismo y tome su madero de tormento día tras día y sígame de continuo. ²⁴Porque el que quiera salvar su alma la perderá; pero el que pierda su alma por causa de mí es el que la salvará. ²⁵Realmente, ¿de qué provecho le es al hombre el que gane el mundo entero pero se pierda a sí mismo o sufra daño? ²⁶Porque el que se avergüence de mí y de mis palabras, de este se avergonzará el Hijo del hombre cuando llegue en su gloria yen la del Padre y de los santos ángeles. ²⁷Pero les digo verdaderamente: Hay algunos de los que están en pie aquí que de ningún modo gustarán la muerte hasta que primero vean el reino de Dios”.

²⁸En efecto, unos ocho días después de estas palabras, tomó consigo a Pedro y a Juan y a Santiago y subió a la montaña a orar. ²⁹Y, mientras oraba, la apariencia de su rostro se hizo diferente, y su vestidura se volvió lustrosamente blanca. ³⁰También, ¡mira!, dos varones conversaban con él, los cuales eran Moisés y Elías. ³¹Estos aparecieron con gloria y se pusieron a hablar de la partida de él que él estaba destinado a cumplir en Jerusalén. ³²Pues bien, Pedro y los que estaban con él estaban cargados de sueño; mas cuando despertaron completamente, vieron la gloria de él y a los dos varones que estaban de pie con él. ³³Y mientras estos iban siendo separados de él, Pedro dijo a Jesús: “Instructor, es excelente que estemos aquí; por eso, erijamos tres tiendas: una para ti y una para Moisés y una para Elías”, pues no se daba cuenta de lo que decía. ³⁴Pero mientras decía estas cosas se formó una nube, y los cubría con su sombra. Al entrar ellos en la nube, se llenaron de temor. ³⁵Y de la nube salió una voz, y dijo: “Este es mi Hijo, el que ha sido escogido. Escúchenle”. ³⁶Y al ocurrir la voz, se halló a Jesús solo. Pero ellos callaron y no informaron a nadie en aquellos días ninguna de las cosas que habían visto.

³⁷Al día siguiente, cuando bajaron de la montaña, una gran muchedumbre vino al encuentro de él. ³⁸Y ¡mira!, un varón clamó de entre la muchedumbre, y dijo: “Maestro, te ruego que mires a mi hijo, porque es mi unigénito, ³⁹y, ¡mira!, un espíritu lo toma, y de repente clama, y lo convulsiona con espumarajos, y apenas se retira de él después de magullarlo. ⁴⁰Y rogué a tus discípulos que lo expulsaran, pero no pudieron”. ⁴¹Respondiendo,Jesús dijo: “Oh generación falta de fe y aviesa, ¿hasta cuándo tengo que continuar con ustedes y soportarlos? Conduce a tu hijo acá”. ⁴²Pero al mismo tiempo que él se acercaba, el demonio lo arrojó al suelo y lo convulsionó violentamente. Sin embargo, Jesús reprendió al espíritu inmundo y sanó al muchacho y se lo entregó a su padre. ⁴³Pues bien, todos empezaron a quedar atónitos ante el poder majestuoso de Dios.

Ahora bien, mientras todos se maravillaban de todas las cosas que él hacía, él dijo a sus discípulos: ⁴⁴“Alojen estas palabras en sus oídos, porque el Hijo del hombre está destinado a ser entregado en manos de los hombres”. ⁴⁵Pero ellos continuaron sin entender este dicho. De hecho, les fue ocultado para que no lo penetraran, y tenían miedo de interrogarle acerca de este dicho.

⁴⁶Entonces entró entre ellos un razonamiento sobre quién de ellos sería el mayor. ⁴⁷Jesús, conociendo el razonamiento de sus corazones, tomó a un niñito, lo puso a su lado, ⁴⁸y les dijo: “Cualquiera que reciba a este niñito sobre la base de mi nombre, a mí me recibe [también], y cualquiera que me recibe a mí, recibe [también] al que me envió. Porque el que se porta como uno de los menores entre todos ustedes es el que es grande”.

⁴⁹Respondiendo, Juan dijo: “Instructor, vimos a cierto hombre que expulsaba demonios por el uso de tu nombre y tratamos de impedírselo, porque no sigue con nosotros”. ⁵⁰Pero Jesús le dijo: “No traten de impedír[selo], porque el que no está contra ustedes está a favor de ustedes”.

⁵¹Como ya se cumplían los días en que había de ser tomado arriba, afirmó su rostro para ir a Jerusalén. ⁵²De modo que envió mensajeros delante de sí. Y ellos fueron por su camino y entraron en una aldea de samaritanos, para hacerle preparativos; ⁵³mas estos no lo recibieron, porque él tenía el rostro fijo para ir a Jerusalén. ⁵⁴Cuando los discípulos Santiago y Juan vieron esto, dijeron: “Señor, ¿quieres que digamos que baje fuego del cielo y los aniquile?”. ⁵⁵Pero él se volvió y los reprendió. ⁵⁶De modo que fueron a una aldea diferente.

⁵⁷Ahora bien, mientras iban por el camino, alguien le dijo: “Te seguiré a cualquier lugar adonde partas”. ⁵⁸Y Jesús le dijo: “Las zorras tienen cuevas y las aves del cielo tienen donde posarse, pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde recostar la cabeza”. ⁵⁹Luego dijo a otro: “Sé mi seguidor”. ³³Whoever seeks to keep his soul safe for himself will lose it, but whoever loses it will preserve it alive.

³³Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.

²⁵He that is fond of his soul destroys it, but he that hates his soul in this world will safeguard it for everlasting life.

³⁹Now we are not the sort that shrink back to destruction, but the sort that have faith to the preserving alive of the soul.
