(2-19) ²But John, having heard in jail about the works of the Christ, sent by means of his own disciples ³and said to him: “Are you the Coming One, or are we to expect a different one?” ⁴In reply Jesus said to them: “Go YOUR way and report to John what YOU are hearing and seeing: ⁵The blind are seeing again, and the lame are walking about, the lepers are being cleansed and the deaf are hearing, and the dead are being raised up, and the poor are having the good news declared to them; ⁶and happy is he that finds no cause for stumbling in me.”

⁷While these were on their way, Jesus started to say to the crowds respecting John: “What did YOU go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed being tossed by a wind? ⁸What, then, did YOU go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Why, those wearing soft garments are in the houses of kings. ⁹Really, then, why did YOU go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell YOU, and far more than a prophet. ¹⁰This is he concerning whom it is written, ‘Look! I myself am sending forth my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way ahead of you!’ ¹¹Truly I say to YOU people, Among those born of women there has not been raised up a greater than John the Baptist; but a person that is a lesser one in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he is. ¹²But from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of the heavens is the goal toward which men press, and those pressing forward are seizing it. ¹³For all, the Prophets and the Law, prophesied until John; ¹⁴and if YOU want to accept it, He himself is ‘Elijah who is destined to come.’ ¹⁵Let him that has ears listen.

¹⁶“With whom shall I compare this generation? It is like young children sitting in the marketplaces who cry out to their playmates, ¹⁷saying, ‘We played the flute for YOU, but YOU did not dance; we wailed, but YOU did not beat yourselves in grief.’ ¹⁸Correspondingly, John came neither eating nor drinking, yet people say, ‘He has a demon’; ¹⁹the Son of man did come eating and drinking, still people say, ‘Look! A man gluttonous and given to drinking wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by its works.”

(2-19) ²When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples ³to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ⁴Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: ⁵The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. ⁶Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” ⁷As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? ⁸If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. ⁹Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰This is the one about whom it is written: ¹¹Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹²From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it. ¹³For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. ¹⁵Whoever has ears, let them hear. ¹⁶“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: ¹⁷“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’ ¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ ¹⁹The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

(2-19) ²Pero Juan, habiendo oído en la cárcel acerca de las obras del Cristo, mandó por medio de sus propios discípulos ³y le dijo: “¿Eres tú Aquel Que Viene, o hemos de esperar a uno diferente?”. ⁴En respuesta, Jesús les dijo: “Vayan e informen a Juan lo que oyen y ven: ⁵Los ciegos ven otra vez, y los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios, y los sordos oyen, y los muertos son levantados, y a los pobres se declaran las buenas nuevas; ⁶y feliz es el que no halla causa para tropiezo en mí”.

⁷Mientras estos iban por su camino, Jesús comenzó a decir a las muchedumbres respecto a Juan: “¿Qué salieron a contemplar en el desierto? ¿Una caña agitada por el viento? ⁸Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido de prendas de vestir suaves? ¡Si los que llevan prendas de vestir suaves están en las casas de reyes! ⁹Verdaderamente, pues, ¿por qué salieron? ¿A ver a un profeta? Sí, les digo, y mucho más que profeta. ¹⁰Este es aquel acerca de quien está escrito: ‘¡Mira! ¡Yo mismo envío a mi mensajero delante de tu rostro, que preparará tu camino delante de ti!’. ¹¹En verdad les digo: Entre los nacidos de mujer no ha sido levantado uno mayor que Juan el Bautista; mas el que sea de los menores en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él. ¹²Pero desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora el reino de los cielos es la meta hacia la cual se adelantan con ardor los hombres, y los que se adelantan con ardor se asen de él. ¹³Porque todos, los Profetas y la Ley, profetizaron hasta Juan; ¹⁴y si ustedes quieren aceptarlo: Él mismo es ‘Elías, que está destinado a venir’. ¹⁵El que tiene oídos, escuche.

¹⁶”¿A quién compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los niñitos sentados en las plazas de mercado, que dan voces a sus compañeros de juego, ¹⁷y dicen: ‘Les tocamos la flauta, pero no danzaron; plañimos, pero no se golpearon en desconsuelo’. ¹⁸Correspondientemente, Juan vino sin comer ni beber, pero dicen: ‘Tiene demonio’; ¹⁹el Hijo del hombre sí vino comiendo y bebiendo, y no obstante dicen: ‘¡Miren! Un hombre glotón y dado a beber vino, amigo de recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores’. De todos modos, la sabiduría queda probada justa por sus obras”.

(18-35) ¹⁸Now John’s disciples reported to him about all these things. ¹⁹So John summoned a certain two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to say: “Are you the Coming One or are we to expect a different one?” ²⁰When they came up to him the men said: “John the Baptist dispatched us to you to say, ‘Are you the Coming One or are we to expect another?’” ²¹In that hour he cured many of sicknesses and grievous diseases and wicked spirits, and granted many blind persons the favor of seeing. ²²Hence in answer he said to the [two]: “Go YOUR way, report to John what YOU saw and heard: the blind are receiving sight, the lame are walking, the lepers are being cleansed and the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised up, the poor are being told the good news. ²³And happy is he who has not stumbled over me.”

²⁴When the messengers of John had gone away, he started to say to the crowds concerning John: “What did YOU go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed being tossed by the wind? ²⁵What, then, did YOU go out to see? A man dressed in soft outer garments? Why, those in splendid dress and existing in luxury are in royal houses. ²⁶Really, then, what did YOU go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell YOU, and far more than a prophet. ²⁷This is he concerning whom it is written, ‘Look! I am sending forth my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way ahead of you.’ ²⁸I tell YOU, Among those born of women there is none greater than John; but a person that is a lesser one in the kingdom of God is greater than he is.” ²⁹(And all the people and the tax collectors, when they heard [this], declared God to be righteous, they having been baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰But the Pharisees and those versed in the Law disregarded the counsel of God to them, they not having been baptized by him.)

³¹“With whom, therefore, shall I compare the men of this generation, and whom are they like? ³²They are like young children sitting in a marketplace and crying out to one another, and who say, ‘We played the flute for YOU, but YOU did not dance; we wailed, but YOU did not weep.’ ³³Correspondingly, John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, but YOU say, ‘He has a demon.’ ³⁴The Son of man has come eating and drinking, but YOU say, ‘Look! A man gluttonous and given to drinking wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ ³⁵All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by all its children.”

(18-35) ¹⁸John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, ¹⁹he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ²⁰When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’” ²¹At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. ²²So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. ²³Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” ²⁴After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? ²⁵If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. ²⁶But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ²⁷This is the one about whom it is written: ²⁸I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” ²⁹(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. ³⁰But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) ³¹Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? ³²They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: ³³For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ ³⁴The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ ³⁵But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

(18-35) ¹⁸Ahora bien, los discípulos de Juan le informaron acerca de todas estas cosas. ¹⁹Entonces Juan mandó llamar a ciertos dos de sus discípulos y los envió al Señor a decir: “¿Eres tú Aquel Que Viene, o hemos de esperar a uno diferente?”. ²⁰Cuando llegaron a él, los varones dijeron: “Juan el Bautista nos despachó a ti a decir: ‘¿Eres tú Aquel Que Viene, o hemos de esperar a otro?’”. ²¹En aquella hora él curó a muchos de enfermedades y de penosas dolencias y de espíritus inicuos, y concedió a muchos ciegos el favor de ver. ²²Por lo tanto, en respuesta dijo a los [dos]: “Vayan, informen a Juan lo que vieron y oyeron: los ciegos reciben la vista, los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios y los sordos oyen, los muertos son levantados, a los pobres se anuncian las buenas nuevas. ²³Y feliz es el que no haya tropezado a causa de mí”.

²⁴Cuando los mensajeros de Juan se hubieron ido, él comenzó a decir a las muchedumbres respecto a Juan: “¿Qué salieron a contemplar en el desierto? ¿Una caña agitada por el viento? ²⁵Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido de suaves prendas exteriores? ¡Si los que visten con esplendor y existen en lujo están en casas reales! ²⁶Verdaderamente, pues, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, les digo, y mucho más que profeta. ²⁷Este es aquel acerca de quien está escrito: ‘¡Mira! Envío a mi mensajero delante de tu rostro, que preparará tu camino delante de ti’. ²⁸Les digo a ustedes: Entre los nacidos de mujer ninguno hay mayor que Juan; pero el que sea de los menores en el reino de Dios es mayor que él”. ²⁹(Y todo el pueblo y los recaudadores de impuestos, al oír [esto], declararon justo a Dios, pues habían sido bautizados con el bautismo de Juan. ³⁰Pero los fariseos y los versados en la Ley habían desatendido el consejo de Dios a ellos, pues no habían sido bautizados por él.)

³¹“¿A quién, por lo tanto, compararé a los hombres de esta generación, y a quién son semejantes? ³²Son semejantes a los niñitos sentados en una plaza de mercado y que se dan voces unos a otros, y dicen: ‘Les tocamos la flauta, pero no danzaron; plañimos, pero no lloraron’. ³³Correspondientemente, Juan el Bautista ha venido sin comer pan ni beber vino, pero ustedes dicen: ‘Tiene demonio’. ³⁴El Hijo del hombre ha venido comiendo y bebiendo, pero ustedes dicen: ‘¡Miren! ¡Un hombre glotón y dado a beber vino, amigo de recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores!’. ³⁵De todos modos, la sabiduría queda probada justa por todos sus hijos”.
