(1-12) ¹In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ²saying: “REPENT, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.” ³This, in fact, is the one spoken of through Isaiah the prophet in these words: “Listen! Someone is crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of Jehovah, YOU people! Make his roads straight.’” ⁴But this very John had his clothing of camel’s hair and a leather girdle around his loins; his food too was insect locusts and wild honey. ⁵Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the country around the Jordan made their way out to him, ⁶and people were baptized by him in the Jordan River, openly confessing their sins.

⁷When he caught sight of many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the baptism, he said to them: “YOU offspring of vipers, who has intimated to YOU to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸So then produce fruit that befits repentance; ⁹and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘As a father we have Abraham.’ For I say to YOU that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ¹⁰Already the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree, then, that does not produce fine fruit is to be cut down and thrown into the fire. ¹¹I, for my part, baptize YOU with water because of YOUR repentance; but the one coming after me is stronger than I am, whose sandals I am not fit to take off. That one will baptize YOU people with holy spirit and with fire. ¹²His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will completely clean up his threshing floor, and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.”

(1-12) ¹In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea ²and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” ³This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ⁴John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. ⁶Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. ⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. ⁹And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. ¹¹“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹²His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

(1-12) ¹En aquellos días vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea, ²y decía: “Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado”. ³Este, de hecho, es aquel de quien se habló por medio de Isaías el profeta con estas palabras: “¡Escuchen! Alguien clama en el desierto: ‘¡Preparen el camino de Jehová! ⁷Cuando alcanzó a ver a muchos de los fariseos y saduceos que venían al bautismo, les dijo: “Prole de víboras, ¿quién los ha intimado a huir de la ira venidera? ⁸Pues, produzcan fruto propio del arrepentimiento; ⁹y no se atrevan a decir dentro de sí: ‘Por padre tenemos a Abrahán’. Porque les digo que de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán. ¹⁰Ya el hacha yace a la raíz de los árboles; por eso, todo árbol que no produce fruto excelente ha de ser cortado y echado al fuego. ¹¹Yo, por mi parte, los bautizo con agua a causa de su arrepentimiento; pero el que viene después de mí es más fuerte que yo, y no soy digno de quitarle las sandalias. Ese los bautizará con espíritu santo y con fuego. ¹²Su aventador está en su mano, y limpiará completamente su era, y recogerá su trigo en el granero, mas la paja la quemará con fuego que no se puede apagar”.

(1-8) ¹[The] beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ: ²Just as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “(Look! I am sending forth my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way;) ³listen! someone is crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of Jehovah, YOU people, make his roads straight,’” ⁴John the baptizer turned up in the wilderness, preaching baptism [in symbol] of repentance for forgiveness of sins. ⁵Consequently all the territory of Judea and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem made their way out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, openly confessing their sins. ⁶Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather girdle around his loins, and was eating insect locusts and wild honey. ⁷And he would preach, saying: “After me someone stronger than I am is coming; I am not fit to stoop and untie the laces of his sandals. ⁸I baptized YOU with water, but he will baptize YOU with holy spirit.”

(1-8) ¹The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, ²as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: ³“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’” ⁴And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁵The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. ⁶John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. ⁷And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. ⁸I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

(1-18) ¹In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was district ruler of Galilee, but Philip his brother was district ruler of the country of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was district ruler of Abilene, ²in the days of chief priest Annas and of Caiaphas, God’s declaration came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

³So he came into all the country around the Jordan, preaching baptism [in symbol] of repentance for forgiveness of sins, ⁴just as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “Listen! Someone is crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of Jehovah, YOU people, make his roads straight. ⁵Every gully must be filled up, and every mountain and hill leveled down, and the curves must become straight ways and the rough places smooth ways; ⁶and all flesh will see the saving means of God.’”

⁷Therefore he began to say to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him: “YOU offspring of vipers, who has intimated to YOU to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸Therefore produce fruits that befit repentance. And do not start saying within yourselves, ‘As a father we have Abraham.’ For I say to YOU that God has power to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ⁹Indeed, the ax is already in position at the root of the trees; every tree, therefore, not producing fine fruit is to be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

¹⁰And the crowds would ask him: “What, then, shall we do?” ¹¹In reply he would say to them: “Let the man that has two undergarments share with the man that has none, and let him that has things to eat do the same.” ¹²But even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him: “Teacher, what shall we do?” ¹³He said to them: “Do not demand anything more than the tax rate.” ¹⁴Also, those in military service would ask him: “What shall we also do?” And he said to them: “Do not harass anybody or accuse anybody falsely, but be satisfied with YOUR provisions.”

¹⁵Now as the people were in expectation and all were reasoning in their hearts about John: “May he perhaps be the Christ?” ¹⁶John gave the answer, saying to all: “I, for my part, baptize YOU with water; but the one stronger than I am is coming, the lace of whose sandals I am not fit to untie. He will baptize YOU people with holy spirit and fire. ¹⁷His winnowing shovel is in his hand to clean up his threshing floor completely and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.”

¹⁸Therefore he also gave many other exhortations and continued declaring good news to the people.

(1-18) ¹In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— ²during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. ³He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ⁵Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
⁶And all people will see God’s salvation.’” ⁷John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” ¹⁰“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. ¹¹John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” ¹²Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” ¹³“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. ¹⁴Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” ¹⁵The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. ¹⁶John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹⁷His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” ¹⁸And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

(1-18) ¹En el año decimoquinto del reinadode Tiberio César, cuando Poncio Pilato era gobernador de Judea, y Herodes era gobernante de distrito de Galilea, pero Filipo su hermano era gobernante de distrito del país de Iturea y de Traconítide, y Lisanias era gobernante de distrito de Abilene, ²en los días del sacerdote principal Anás, y de Caifás, la declaración de Dios vino a Juan el hijo de Zacarías en el desierto.

³De modo que él entró en toda la comarca del Jordán, predicando bautismo [en símbolo] de arrepentimiento para perdón de pecados, ⁴así como está escrito en el libro de las palabras de Isaías el profeta: “¡Escuchen! ⁷Por eso empezó a decir a las muchedumbres que salían para ser bautizadas por él: “Prole de víboras, ¿quién les ha intimado a huir de la ira venidera? ⁸Por lo tanto, produzcan frutos propios del arrepentimiento. Y no comiencen a decir dentro de sí: ‘Por padre tenemos a Abrahán’. Porque les digo que Dios tiene poder para levantar de estas piedras hijos a Abrahán. ⁹De hecho, el hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; por lo tanto, todo árbol que no produce fruto excelente ha de ser cortado y echado al fuego”.

¹⁰Y las muchedumbres le preguntaban: “Entonces, ¿qué haremos?”. ¹¹En respuesta les decía: “El que tiene dos prendas de vestir interiores comparta con el que no tiene, y el que tiene comestibles haga lo mismo”. ¹²Pero hasta recaudadores de impuestos vinieron a bautizarse, y le dijeron: “Maestro, ¿qué haremos?”. ¹³Él les dijo: “No exijan nada en exceso del impuesto fijo”. ¹⁴También, los que estaban en el servicio militar le preguntaban: “¿Qué haremos nosotros también?”. Y les dijo: “No acosen a nadie, ni acusen falsamente a nadie, y estén satisfechos con lo que se les suministra”.

¹⁵Ahora bien, estando el pueblo en expectación, y todos razonando en sus corazones acerca de Juan: “¿Acaso será él el Cristo?”, ¹⁶Juan contestó, y dijo a todos: “Yo, por mi parte, los bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, la correa de cuyas sandalias no soy digno de desatarle. Él los bautizará con espíritu santo y con fuego. ¹⁷Su aventador está en su mano para limpiar por completo su era y para recoger el trigo en su granero, pero la paja la quemará con fuego que no se puede apagar”.

¹⁸Por lo tanto, también dio muchas otras exhortaciones y continuó declarando buenas nuevas al pueblo.

(6-8) ⁶There arose a man that was sent forth as a representative of God: his name was John. ⁷This [man] came for a witness, in order to bear witness about the light, that people of all sorts might believe through him. ⁸He was not that light, but he was meant to bear witness about that light.

(6-8) ⁶There was a man sent from God whose name was John. ⁷He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. ⁸He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

(6-8) ⁶Se levantó un hombre que fue enviado como representante de Dios: su nombre era Juan. ⁷Este [hombre] vino para testimonio, a fin de dar testimonio acerca de la luz, para que gente de toda clase creyera por medio de él. ⁸Él no era aquella luz, sino que había de dar testimonio acerca de aquella luz.

(15-28) ¹⁵(John bore witness about him, yes, he actually cried out—this was the one who said [it]—saying: “The one coming behind me has advanced in front of me, because he existed before me.”) ¹⁶For we all received from out of his fullness, even undeserved kindness upon undeserved kindness. ¹⁷Because the Law was given through Moses, the undeserved kindness and the truth came to be through Jesus Christ. ¹⁸No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten god who is in the bosom [position] with the Father is the one that has explained him.

¹⁹Now this is the witness of John when the Jews sent forth priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him to ask him: “Who are you?” ²⁰And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed: “I am not the Christ.” ²¹And they asked him: “What, then? Are you Elijah?” And he said: “I am not.” “Are you The Prophet?” And he answered: “No!” ²²Therefore they said to him: “Who are you? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” ²³He said: “I am a voice of someone crying out in the wilderness, ‘MAKE the way of Jehovah straight,’ just as Isaiah the prophet said.” ²⁴Now those sent forth were from the Pharisees. ²⁵So they questioned him and said to him: “Why, then, do you baptize if you yourself are not the Christ or Elijah or The Prophet?” ²⁶John answered them, saying: “I baptize in water. In the midst of YOU one is standing whom YOU do not know, ²⁷the one coming behind me, but the lace of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” ²⁸These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

(15-28) ¹⁵(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) ¹⁶Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. ¹⁷For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ¹⁸No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. ¹⁹Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. ²⁰He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” ²¹They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” ²²Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” ²³John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” ²⁴Now the Pharisees who had been sent ²⁵questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” ²⁶“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. ²⁷He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” ²⁸This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
