¹²Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.

(3-5) ³For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him away in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother. ⁴For John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to be having her.” ⁵However, although he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they took him for a prophet.

(3-5) ³Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, ⁴for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” ⁵Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.

(17-20) ¹⁷For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John and bound him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her. ¹⁸For John had repeatedly said to Herod: “It is not lawful for you to be having the wife of your brother.” ¹⁹But Herodias was nursing a grudge against him and was wanting to kill him, but could not. ²⁰For Herod stood in fear of John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man; and he was keeping him safe. And after hearing him he was at a great loss what to do, yet he continued to hear him gladly.

(17-20) ¹⁷For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. ¹⁸For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, ²⁰because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.

(17-20) ¹⁷Pues Herodes mismo había enviado a arrestar a Juan y lo había atado en prisión a causa de Herodías, la esposa de Filipo su hermano, porque se había casado con ella. ¹⁸Porque Juan había dicho repetidas veces a Herodes: “No te es lícito tener a la esposa de tu hermano”. ¹⁹Pero Herodías le abrigaba rencor y quería matarlo, pero no podía. ²⁰Porque Herodes le tenía temor a Juan, sabiendo que era varón justo y santo; y lo tenía protegido. Y después de oírlo estaba muy indeciso en cuanto a qué hacer; sin embargo, continuaba oyéndole con gusto.

(19-20) ¹⁹But Herod the district ruler, for being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of his brother and concerning all the wicked deeds that Herod did, ²⁰added also this to all those [deeds]: he locked John up in prison.

(19-20) ¹⁹But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, ²⁰Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

(1-3) ¹When, now, the Lord became aware that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John— ²although, indeed, Jesus himself did no baptizing but his disciples did— ³he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

(1-3) ¹Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— ²although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. ³So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
