(5-25)
5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there happened to be a certain priest named Zechariah of the division of Abijah, and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6They both were righteous before God because of walking blamelessly in accord with all the commandments and legal requirements of Jehovah.
7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well along in years.
8Now as he was acting as priest in the assignment of his division before God,
9according to the solemn practice of the priestly office it became his turn to offer incense when he entered into the sanctuary of Jehovah;
10and all the multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of offering incense.
11To him Jehovah’s angel appeared, standing at the right side of the incense altar.
12But Zechariah became troubled at the sight, and fear fell upon him.
13However, the angel said to him: “Have no fear, Zechariah, because your supplication has been favorably heard, and your wife Elizabeth will become mother to a son to you, and you are to call his name John.
14And you will have joy and great gladness, and many will rejoice over his birth;
15for he will be great before Jehovah. But he must drink no wine and strong drink at all, and he will be filled with holy spirit right from his mother’s womb;
16and many of the sons of Israel will he turn back to Jehovah their God.
17Also, he will go before him with Elijah’s spirit and power, to turn back the hearts of fathers to children and the disobedient ones to the practical wisdom of righteous ones, to get ready for Jehovah a prepared people.”
18And Zechariah said to the angel: “How am I to be sure of this? For I am aged and my wife is well along in years.”
19In reply the angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, who stands near before God, and I was sent forth to speak with you and declare the good news of these things to you.
20But, look! you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their appointed time.”
21Meanwhile the people continued waiting for Zechariah, and they began to wonder at his delaying in the sanctuary.
22But when he came out he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that he had just seen a supernatural sight in the sanctuary; and he kept making signs to them, but remained dumb.
23When, now, the days of his public service were fulfilled, he went off to his home.
24But after these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant; and she kept herself secluded for five months, saying:
25“This is the way Jehovah has dealt with me in these days when he has given me his attention to take away my reproach among men.”

5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
6Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
7But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
13But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.
14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
16He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
17And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
19The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
20And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23When his time of service was completed, he returned home.
24After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.
25“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

9conforme a la práctica solemne del oficio sacerdotal le tocó su turno de ofrecer el incienso al entrar en el santuario de Jehová;
14Y tendrás gozo y gran alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento;
15porque él será grande delante de Jehová. Mas no debe beber en absoluto vino ni bebida alcohólica alguna, y estará lleno de espíritu santo hasta desde la matriz de su madre;
