13Moreover, brothers, we do not want YOU to be ignorant concerning those who are sleeping [in death]; that YOU may not sorrow just as the rest also do who have no hope.

13Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

13Además, hermanos, no queremos que estén en ignorancia respecto a los que están durmiendo [en la muerte]; para que no se apesadumbren ustedes como lo hacen también los demás que no tienen esperanza.

(16-18)
16“When YOU are fasting, stop becoming sad-faced like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to YOU, They are having their reward in full.
17But you, when fasting, grease your head and wash your face,
18that you may appear to be fasting, not to men, but to your Father who is in secrecy; then your Father who is looking on in secrecy will repay you.

16“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
18so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

16”Cuando ayunen, dejen de ponerse de rostro triste como los hipócritas, porque ellos desfiguran su rostro para que a los hombres les parezca que ayunan. En verdad les digo: Ellos ya disfrutan de su galardón completo.
17Mas tú, cuando ayunes, úntate la cabeza [con aceite] y lávate el rostro,
18para que no les parezca a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en lo secreto; entonces tu Padre que mira en secreto te lo pagará.
