⁵For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.

⁵For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even their name is forgotten.

⁵Porque los vivos tienen conciencia de que morirán; pero en cuanto a los muertos, ellos no tienen conciencia de nada en absoluto, ni tienen ya más salario, porque el recuerdo de ellos se ha olvidado.

Together the stupid one and the unreasoning one perish,
And they must leave to others their means of maintenance.

¹⁰For all can see that the wise die,
that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
leaving their wealth to others.

¹⁰Porque él ve que aun los sabios mueren,
juntos el estúpido y el irrazonable perecen,

His glory will not go down along with him himself.

Nevermore will they see the light.

(17-19) ¹⁷for they will take nothing with them when they die,
   their splendor will not descend with them.
¹⁸Though while they live they count themselves blessed—
   and people praise you when you prosper—
¹⁹they will join those who have gone before them,
   who will never again see the light of life.

(17-19) ¹⁷pues al morir no puede llevarse absolutamente nada;
su gloria no descenderá junto con él mismo.

¹⁸Pues durante su vida siguió bendiciendo su propia alma
(y la gente te elogiará porque te haces el bien a ti mismo);

¹⁹[su alma] finalmente llega solo hasta la generación de sus antepasados.
