Xchg : Abel-Sacrifice and Death of

(2-26) ²Later she again gave birth, to his brother Abel.

And Abel came to be a herder of sheep, but Cain became a cultivator of the ground. ³And it came about at the expiration of some time that Cain proceeded to bring some fruits of the ground as an offering to Jehovah. ⁴But as for Abel, he too brought some firstlings of his flock, even their fatty pieces. Now while Jehovah was looking with favor upon Abel and his offering, ⁵he did not look with any favor upon Cain and upon his offering. And Cain grew hot with great anger, and his countenance began to fall. ⁶At this Jehovah said to Cain: “Why are you hot with anger and why has your countenance fallen? ⁷If you turn to doing good, will there not be an exaltation? But if you do not turn to doing good, there is sin crouching at the entrance, and for you is its craving; and will you, for your part, get the mastery over it?”

⁸After that Cain said to Abel his brother: [“Let us go over into the field.”] So it came about that while they were in the field Cain proceeded to assault Abel his brother and kill him. ⁹Later on Jehovah said to Cain: “Where is Abel your brother?” and he said: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s guardian?” ¹⁰At this he said: “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground. ¹¹And now you are cursed in banishment from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hand. ¹²When you cultivate the ground, it will not give you back its power. A wanderer and a fugitive you will become in the earth.” ¹³At this Cain said to Jehovah: “My punishment for error is too great to carry. ¹⁴Here you are actually driving me this day from off the surface of the ground, and from your face I shall be concealed; and I must become a wanderer and fugitive on the earth, and it is certain that anyone finding me will kill me.” ¹⁵At this Jehovah said to him: “For that reason anyone killing Cain must suffer vengeance seven times.”

And so Jehovah set up a sign for Cain in order that no one finding him should strike him. ¹⁶With that Cain went away from the face of Jehovah and took up residence in the land of Fugitiveness to the east of Eden.

¹⁷Afterward Cain had intercourse with his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then he engaged in building a city and called the city’s name by the name of his son Enoch. ¹⁸Later there was born to Enoch Irad. And Irad became father to Mehujael, and Mehujael became father to Methushael, and Methushael became father to Lamech.

¹⁹And Lamech proceeded to take two wives for himself. The name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zillah. ²⁰In time Adah gave birth to Jabal. He proved to be the founder of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. ²¹And the name of his brother was Jubal. He proved to be the founder of all those who handle the harp and the pipe. ²²As for Zillah, she too gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of every sort of tool of copper and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. ²³Consequently Lamech composed these words for his wives Adah and Zillah:

“Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech;
Give ear to my saying:
A man I have killed for wounding me,
Yes, a young man for giving me a blow.

²⁴If seven times Cain is to be avenged,
Then Lamech seventy times and seven.”

²⁵And Adam proceeded to have intercourse again with his wife and so she gave birth to a son and called his name Seth, because, as she said: “God has appointed another seed in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.” ²⁶And to Seth also there was born a son and he proceeded to call his name Enosh. At that time a start was made of calling on the name of Jehovah.

(2-26) ²Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. ³In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. ⁴And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, ⁵but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. ⁶Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? ⁷If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” ⁸Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. ⁹Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” ¹⁰The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. ¹¹Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. ¹²When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” ¹³Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. ¹⁴Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” ¹⁵But the LORD said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. ¹⁶So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. ¹⁷Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. ¹⁸To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech. ¹⁹Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. ²⁰Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. ²¹His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. ²²Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah. ²³Lamech said to his wives, ²⁴If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times.” ²⁵Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” ²⁶Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.

Y Caín se enardeció de gran cólera, y empezó a decaérsele el semblante. ⁶Por lo cual Jehová dijo a Caín: “¿Por qué estás enardecido de cólera, y por qué se te ha decaído el semblante? ⁷Si te diriges a hacer lo bueno, ¿no habrá ensalzamiento? Pero si no te diriges a hacer lo bueno, hay pecado agazapado a la entrada, y su deseo vehemente es por ti; y tú, por tu parte, ¿lograrás el dominio sobre él?”.

⁸Después de eso, Caín dijo a Abel su hermano: [“Vamos allá al campo”.] De modo que aconteció que, mientras estaban en el campo, Caín procedió a atacar a Abel su hermano y a matarlo. ⁹Más tarde Jehová dijo a Caín: “¿Dónde está Abel tu hermano?”, y él dijo: “No sé. ¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?”. ¹⁰A lo cual él dijo: “¿Qué has hecho? ¡Escucha! La sangre de tu hermano está clamando a mí desde el suelo. ¹¹Y ahora se te maldice con destierro del suelo, que ha abierto su boca para recibir la sangre de tu hermano [derramada] por mano tuya. ¹²Cuando cultives el suelo, no te devolverá su poder. Errante y fugitivo llegarás a ser en la tierra”. ¹³Por lo cual Caín dijo a Jehová: “Mi castigo por el error es demasiado grande para llevarlo. ¹⁴Aquí efectivamente estás expulsándome hoy de sobre la superficie del suelo, y de tu rostro estaré oculto; y tendré que llegar a ser errante y fugitivo en la tierra, y es cosa segura que cualquiera que me halle me matará”. ¹⁵Ante eso, Jehová le dijo: “Por esa razón, cualquiera que mate a Caín tiene que sufrir venganza siete veces”.

De modo que Jehová estableció una señal para Caín a fin de que nadie que lo hallara lo hiriese. ¹⁶Con eso, Caín se fue de ante el rostro de Jehová y se puso a morar en la tierra de la Condición de Fugitivo, al este de Edén.

¹⁷Después Caín tuvo coito con su esposa, y ella quedó encinta y dio a luz a Enoc. Entonces [Caín] se ocupó en edificar una ciudad, y llamó la ciudad por el nombre de su hijo Enoc. ¹⁸Más tarde, a Enoc le nació Irad. E Irad llegó a ser padre de Mehujael, y Mehujael llegó a ser padre de Metusael, y Metusael llegó a ser padre de Lamec.

¹⁹Y Lamec procedió a tomar para sí dos esposas. El nombre de la primera fue Adá y el nombre de la segunda fue Zilá. ²⁰Con el tiempo, Adá dio a luz a Jabal. Él resultó fundador de los que moran en tiendas y tienen ganado. ²¹Y el nombre de su hermano fue Jubal. Él resultó fundador de todos los que manejan el arpa y el caramillo. ²²En cuanto a Zilá, ella también dio a luz a Tubal-caín, forjador de toda clase de herramienta de cobre y de hierro. Y la hermana de Tubal-caín fue Naamá. ²³Por consiguiente, Lamec compuso estas palabras para sus esposas Adá y Zilá:
“Oigan mi voz, esposas de Lamec;
presten oído a mi dicho:
A un hombre he matado por haberme herido,
sí, a un joven por haberme dado un golpe.

²⁴Si siete veces ha de ser vengado Caín,
entonces Lamec setenta veces y siete”.

²⁵Y Adán procedió a tener coito otra vez con su esposa, de modo que ella dio a luz un hijo y lo llamó por nombre Set, porque, según dijo ella: “Dios ha nombrado otra descendencia en lugar de Abel, porque Caín lo mató”. ²⁶Y a Set también le nació un hijo, y él procedió a llamarlo por nombre Enós. En aquel tiempo se dio comienzo a invocar el nombre de Jehová.

(11-12) ¹¹For this is the message which YOU have heard from [the] beginning, that we should have love for one another; ¹²not like Cain, who originated with the wicked one and slaughtered his brother. And for the sake of what did he slaughter him? Because his own works were wicked, but those of his brother [were] righteous.

(11-12) ¹¹For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. ¹²Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

(11-12) ¹¹Porque este es el mensaje que ustedes han oído desde [el] principio, que debemos tener amor unos para con otros; ¹²no como Caín, que se originó del inicuo y degolló a su hermano. ¿Y por qué causa lo degolló? Porque sus propias obras eran inicuas, pero las de su hermano [eran] justas.
