(8-21)
8But Daniel determined in his heart that he would not pollute himself with the delicacies of the king and with his drinking wine. And he kept requesting of the principal court official that he might not pollute himself.
9Accordingly the [true] God gave Daniel over to loving-kindness and to mercy before the principal court official.
10So the principal court official said to Daniel: “I am in fear of my lord the king, who has appointed YOUR food and YOUR drink. Why, then, should he see YOUR faces dejected-looking in comparison with the children who are of the same age as YOURS, and [why] should YOU have to make my head guilty to the king?”
11But Daniel said to the guardian whom the principal court official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah:
12“Please, put your servants to the test for ten days, and let them give us some vegetables that we may eat and water that we may drink;
13and let our countenances and the countenance of the children who are eating the delicacies of the king appear before you, and according to what you see do with your servants.”
14Finally he listened to them as regards this matter and put them to the test for ten days.
15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the children who were eating the delicacies of the king.
16So the guardian kept on taking away their delicacies and their drinking wine and giving them vegetables.
17And as for these children, the four of them, to them the [true] God gave knowledge and insight in all writing and wisdom; and Daniel himself had understanding in all sorts of visions and dreams.
18And at the end of the days that the king had said to bring them in, the principal court official also proceeded to bring them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19And the king began to speak with them, and out of them all no one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; and they continued to stand before the king.
20And as regards every matter of wisdom [and] understanding that the king inquired about from them, he even got to find them ten times better than all the magic-practicing priests [and] the conjurers that were in all his royal realm.
21And Daniel continued on until the first year of Cyrus the king.

8But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
9Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel,
10but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
11Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
12“Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
14So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
15At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.
16So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.
17To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
18At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.
20In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

8Pero Daniel se resolvió en su corazón a no contaminarse con los manjaresexquisitos del rey ni con su vino de beber. Y siguió solicitando del oficial principal de la corte no contaminarse.
9Por consiguiente, el Dios [verdadero] entregó a Daniel a bondad amorosa y misericordia delante del oficial principal de la corte.
10De manera que el oficial principal de la corte dijo a Daniel: “Estoy en temor de mi señor el rey, quien ha señalado el alimento y la bebida de ustedes. ¿Por qué, entonces, debería él ver sus rostros con apariencia decaída en comparación con los niños que son de su misma edad, y [por qué] deberían ustedes tener que hacer culpable mi cabeza ante el rey?”.
11Pero Daniel dijo al guardián que el oficial principalde la corte había nombrado sobre Daniel, Hananías, Misael y Azarías:
12“Por favor, pon a tus siervos a prueba por diez días, y que nos den algunas legumbres para que comamos, y agua para que bebamos;
13y que nuestros semblantes y el semblante de los niños que están comiendo los manjares exquisitos del rey se presenten delante de ti, y, según lo que veas, haz con tus siervos”.
14Finalmente él les escuchó respecto a este asunto y los puso a prueba por diez días.
15Y al fin de diez días el semblante de ellos pareció mejor y más nutrido en carnes que [el de] todos los niños que estaban comiendo los manjares exquisitos del rey.
16De modo que el guardián siguió llevándose de ellos sus manjares exquisitos y su vino de beber, y dándoles legumbres.
17Y en cuanto a estos niños, los cuatro, el Dios [verdadero] les dio conocimiento y perspicacia en toda escritura y sabiduría; y Daniel mismo tenía entendimiento en toda suerte de visiones y sueños.
18Y al fin de los días que había dicho el rey para que se los llevaran, el oficial principal de la corte también procedió a llevarlos delante de Nabucodonosor.
19Y el rey empezó a hablar con ellos, y de todos ellos no se halló a nadie como Daniel, Hananías, Misael y Azarías; y ellos continuaron estando de pie delantedel rey.
20Y en lo que respecta a todo asunto de sabiduría [y] entendimiento que el rey inquiría de ellos, hasta llegó a hallarlos diez veces mejores que todos los sacerdotes practicantes de magia [y] los sortílegos que había en toda su región real.
21Y Daniel continuó hasta el primer año de Ciro el rey.
